Fly fishermen have two options this Winter. The first is to take advantage of the Chinooks we have in Calgary and fish slow runs where the fish stack up, or to try the deep pools with slow, deep sinking lines to wake the fish from their hibernation in these deep watery caves. The second is to don the ski-doo suit, grab the auger and ice hut, and go ice fishing.

Tip - It is important to remember that in the cold water trout become much more lethargic and therefore are less likely to chase their prey. This is when slower, shorter strips and simply swinging flies becomes most effective. Often times these retrieves will entice those trout that are not as apt to expend much energy.

What kind of water should I be targeting for fly fishing this time of year? The low water conditions will push the trout into larger deeper runs that become known as wintering holes. On the Bow River year after year there are certain deep runs and pools that never freeze over and these can often times be great winter holding water.

When winter arrives many fly fishers put away their rods and find other ways to pass away the time in this off-season. Fly tying, tackle tinkering, book reading and various other diversions help pass the Canadian winter. Fortunately there are a few rivers in Alberta that not only have no closed season, or sections that don’t close, but also have stretches of open and fishable water all year round!
