JULY

A belated Happy Canada Day to you all.  We had a nice event here with over 50 people playing in our fireworks event and another 30 or more joining us for a bite and the best seat in the City to watch the fireworks.

A quick update on a couple things.  As I’m sure you’ve seen, our stairs on the forward box on hole number 11 have broken down and we’ve got pilons there alerting people to that.  We are in the process of getting a new set of stairs built at the very back of the tee box which will allow use of the entire tee deck without worrying about the hand rail coming into play which is a big safety risk.  This will also give Dave and his crew more space on which to put the gold and red tees.  I’ll stay in touch on timeline but we are just sourcing materials now and once started, it shouldn’t take long to complete.

The lines in the parking lot need to be done asap. I’m having a quote done today and if feasible we will get that project done next week.

We've got a couple outside tournaments next week.  Meyers Norris Penny is hosting their annual event next Wednesday and Habitat for Humanity is back for another year on Thursday afternoon.  That will be it for outside events for July as we settle into “normal" play days from then on.

The Mixed Club Championship is slated for Saturday, July 21st - please call the shop for details.

Lastly when I arrived at the club yesterday I could see that Dave and his team had “verticut" the greens.  This process is done with a separate piece of machinery that essentially slices top to bottom. Our greens are primarily made up of two types of grass plants – Poa Annua and Bent. The poa tends to grow straight up and down and will flower at the top of the plant (think cauliflower heads). The bent doesn’t flower but will tend to infringe on the poa at its base.  Verticutting promotes both plants to grow straight up and down which gives them more room to grow and gives us a better chance to cut them at consistent heights for a consistent roll.  I think we can all agree that our greens are rolling beautifully.  I played yesterday and each of my 43 putts had a great roll, albeit not into the hole. That’s on me.

Our upcoming maintenance Monday will see the crew doing a light topdressing of sand which will be rolled in and then cut.  The crew will also be aerating the collars with a 1/2 inch solid tine and hauling additional bunker sand to the traps that require some additional splash factor.

Thanks again for all of your support and enthusiasm for this great place – we'll see you soon.

Kind Regards,
Dave Nelson
Director of Golf
