Good afternoon all: Weather permitting we are hosting the Lethbridge Construction Association tournament tomorrow afternoon. I am hopeful that Mother Nature allows us to get in our member golf in the morning and the tournament in the afternoon but we’ll have to see. Next week we are hosting the Lethbridge Therapeutic Riding Association tournament on Wednesday afternoon and that is about it for corporate tournaments this month.
I am hopeful that we will be on our new tee boxes in the very near future which will be really great. Other projects on the go as you’ve seen is some re-sodding where old man winter did his damage. Those sections will catch quick and will be back in play shortly.
The club started a Maintenance Monday a couple years ago and it is designed to give the crew an extra couple hours every other week to either catch up or get ahead on a number or procedures. One of the main ones is to give the greens a very light top dressing of sand. They have found that this really helps to keep the greens rolling smooth. As I’m sure most of you know our greens are made up mostly of a grass called Poa Annua. It's main characteristics are that it takes a higher consistent soil temperature to get going in the spring, it grows mostly straight up and down and once it starts growing it produces seeds on the top of the plant. Think of it as little cauliflowers. The challenge from a maintenance and playability standpoint is the greens can get bumpy later in the day because of the growth of the plant. Dave has a great program to maintain this and produce a green with a very true roll which we are seeing. That extra bit of time every other Monday allows them to get this kind of stuff done as well as other procedures before our first group gets out on course.
I apologize for the inconvenience it may cause but I believe it allows Dave and his team a bit of a leg up on maintaining and presenting our golf course which I believe to be the best conditioned in the South. We’ll monitor it and make sure that the time spent has tangible benefits for the playability of the course and if it doesn’t then we’ll go a different direction.
I want to thank those of you who have emailed me back or talked to me at the Club over the last few weeks about the practice areas. We will take it all under advisement and keep you in the loop on what the decision is.
