HENDERSON LAKE GOLF CLUB - NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS JUNE 21-22
Henderson Lake Golf Club – Historic Snapshot
Today, Henderson Lake Golf Course is just one of the City facilities located at the complex that surrounds Henderson Lake. The Japanese Gardens, the playground, dock, walkways, picnic facilities and parkland on the north shore, the swimming pool, skate park, baseball facility, ice arena, tennis courts and the exhibition grounds round out a host of activities available to residents and visitors to the City. However, this highly valued and heavy utilized area had humble beginnings which required the persistent and vigilant attention and efforts of the City Councils and caring residents over many years.
In 1909, then Mayor William Henderson negotiated a deal with the Alberta Railway and Irrigation Company to purchase 300 acres of land at Henderson Lake for $150 per acre which also included the water rights. Today, Henderson Lake Golf Course sits on 101 acres of the original purchase. The plan then was to develop this area on the north shore which was close to a residential area of the City into a park that would include a merry-go-round, movie theater, zoo and a swimming area. The south side of the lake wasn’t being utilized at the time and consisted of rangeland.
" I wonder if the City of Lethbridge would sell us the golf course at this price $150 /acre would be a great deal." M. Plouffe
